Well, the safety of products consumed by people depends on being able to remove all forms of particulate threat, including the spores of pathogenic protozoan parasites in water and liquids. The protozoa exist as cysts outside of a living host. In this form, they survive for extended periods in water and are relatively resistant to inactivation by chemical disinfectants. Boiling or absolute filtration at the micron level is required to remove the cysts.
